Today’s moment happened during a 5th grade language arts lesson. I’m trying to spend more time in this particular class because their teacher decided not to return after the winter break. A sub is covering the class and content is being taught by our awesome reading resource teacher.
During the lesson, a student approached me with a clarifying question about Buffalo Chips. The text just didn’t provide enough information for him to figure out what exactly they are.
I took a second to find a great image of a woman hauling a wheelbarrow full of them. It got even better when I told them it was hardened poop. “Ewwww! They used that for fuel? And they played with it? Disgusting!”
I love our 5th graders.

There is nothing like seeing the face of a student who has struggled with severe behavior/emotional difficulties when they achieve academic success. I celebrated today with a 4th grader who is starting to realize that effort pays off! The other students applauded! ❤️
